Max starts as an undercover DEA agent infiltrating a drug cartel to gain information about an impending war between two factions within the mafia The Angels Of Death, led by Vladimir Lem (who ordered Max’s family murdered), and The Cleaners, who are led by Max’s new boss, Jim Bravura. Max’s wife and newborn daughter were killed in a drive-by shooting at the beginning of Max Payne, which has left Max with an unhealthy addiction to painkillers. Max also returns as the protagonist of Max Payne 2, but he’s working for the DEA this time.
